Fifteenth-century stove tiles
Ornamented stove tiles from the time when Baia was the first capital of Moldavia.
The stove tiles found in the hearths of medieval houses in Baia date from the fifteenth century, the golden age of the town. Baia was the first capital of Moldavia, and its seal, a stag bearing a cross between its antlers, is among the oldest surviving town seals.
The ornaments on the tiles, knights, fantastic beasts and Gothic motifs, speak of the town’s ties with Transylvanian craftsmen and of a place that in December 1467 became the battlefield of Stephen the Great and Matthias Corvinus.
